Airport workers in Akwa Ibom have conferred an award of Honour to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his immense contributions to the aviation sub-sector in the state and Nigeria in general.

The award ceremony which took place at the Victor Attah International Airport, was part of activities to mark the 2024 International Civil Aviation Day.

The ceremony also featured a fitness walk and vibrant dance performances even as it highlighted the remarkable strides of Umo Eno’s administration in aviation industry.

Speaking as the special guest of Honour at the award ceremony, the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon KufreAbasi Edidem commended Governor Eno for recognizing the importance of aviation as a driving force for economic growth, tourism, and regional integration.

The Deputy Speaker noted that the growth in aviation sector is pivotal to the development of the state.

The Chairman of Ibom Airport Development Company, Dr. Iniong Essien, used the opportunity of the event to express appreciation to the airport workers for their positive attitude towards their assigned duties, which has translated to the huge successes recorded in the industry.

Essien acknowledged the governor’s consistent support for the sector, stressing that without such leadership, the progress in the State aviation industry would not have been possible.

He expressed gratitude to God for the safe working environment the airport has enjoyed over the years and appreciated the governor’s investments in ensuring a safe and secure aviation environment for both workers and passengers.

Also speaking, Comrade Sunny James, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Akwa Ibom Chapter, who was accompanied by labour leaders in the state, applauded Governor Eno for his forward-thinking approach towards improving the airport facilities, enhancing safety measures, and increasing flight frequencies to make the airport stand out as one of the best in the country.

Chairman of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) at Victor Attah International Airport, Mr. Ukeme Utuk, commended the governor for directing a review of workers’ conditions of service.

He highlighted the need for continuous technological advancements in aviation in the area of safety systems and environmental sustainability, adding that aviation workers contribute to such improvements through rigorous training and adherence to operational standards.

Etuk, however, stressed the need for modern equipment at airports across Nigeria, saying that obsolete facilities hinder effective operations and passenger satisfaction. He called for improved remuneration for workers to drive the sector’s growth and ensure a friendly working environment.

The 2024 International Civil Aviation Day celebration underscored the importance of aviation in promoting safety, security, and sustainable development in the global economy.
